Birthday Owl

March 31, 2007

Birthday Owl

This was given to me as a kit to assemble by one of my friends when I was about five. If you think it looks complicated, you’re right. I’m pretty sure it was put together by dad with some ‘help’ from me. He’s stood up to time remarkably well, given how easy it is to snap bits off – he’s only missing one toe.

Junkers JU-88

Junkers JU-88

I built lots and lots of Airfix planes when I was younger (hence the… loose application of decals), and they’re all still hanging from my bedroom ceiling at home. This Junkers JU 88 (I think – it has been a while) is engaged in a dogfight with the Lancaster Bomber next to it – terribly realistic, I know.

A bright spot

A bright spot

Returning from Cambridge, it thankfully wasn’t raining but it was a very mundane and dreary day. This tree covered in blossom was a complete change from what I had seen on the journey so far; it came very much appreciated.

Barenaked Ladies

Barenaked Ladies

My two favourite bands are both American and not terribly popular; my chances of seeing them unless I go to America are nil. Barenaked Ladies are ranked in my personal chart right below them, and are Canadian. When I heard that they were doing a UK tour for their new album – coming to Cambridge, no less – I bought a ticket as fast as I could. It was possibly the best concert I’ve been to (the Nizlopi Secret Session rivals it – otherwise it would be the undisputed best). If and when they come back, even if it’s not to Cambridge, I’m going to try my hardest to see them again.

Sunset

Sunset

Sunsets are a bit cliché to take photographs of, I know, but I couldn’t resist this one. I failed to capture the intensity of the colour seen, unfortunately (perhaps related to my red-sky dilemma (27th of February), but it was beautiful. The neighbor’s house made the angle rather forced, but I am at least satisfied with this.

Fractions and Frustrations

Fractions and Frustrations

Never have I hated fractions with such a passion. Those big lines across the page aren’t crossing things out, or dividing up sections – those are the dividing line in my fractions. I have numerators four lines long! Needless to say, I’m pretty sure there’s a better way to do the question.

Plant

Plant

I…. don’t actually know what this plant is. It lives in our garden, and it’s just unashamedly yellow. I think it’s great, though.

Dragon Optical Illusion

Dragon Optical Illusion

One of my favorite optical illusions. A photo doesn’t do it justice, but if you move side to side the head follows you around the room. Indeed, moving up and down also works, but there’s less freedom and it’s harder to do.

Winner!

Winner!

At the turn of the year I entered a 100-question competition, with prizes of random junk sent to the magazine (Computer and Video Games) over the year. I left before the prize arrived, so this was the first time I got to see it. The hats at the top didn’t quite make it in, but it’s quite a cool collection of stuff.

Something Missing?

Something Missing?

I go away, and look at what happens – we end up with half of our fence missing. No-one even tells me! It makes the garden look a lot bigger though.
