Oakie-Dokey

Oakie-Dokey

Back to the faces-in-inanimate-objects theme. This bugged me for some reason when we moved into the new house years ago – the vaguely depressed, teardrop shaped head with a neck, nose, eyes and mouth.

The Names are the Same…

The Names are the Same...

…but the faces have changed. I ran across Dave Gorman’s Flickr page a while back, and one of the things that he takes photos of are inanimate objects that look like they have faces. This box has been outside my room for the last few days, but when I was walking to bed half-asleep the first time it was there, I actually double-took because it weirded me out.

Essential Viewing

Essential Viewing

This must be some use of the word ‘Essential’ of which I was previously unaware. I was at the cinema to see Knocked Up, which was actually rather good.

Unnecessary

Unnecessary

Almost the dictionary definition of unnecessary, I would have said. Note that I’ve been to the beach four days out of the last four. Note also that it is August. I would therefore put it to you, the jury, that mittens are unnecessary in the evening. Still, it made me laugh.

The Beach, Triple Encore!

The Beach, Triple Encore!

Fourth day in a row that I’ve been to the beach and it’s great. I sort of snatched this photo from the jaws of failure; it started off as having horrible white-balance, and there was sand on the lens when I took it, which I removed with great care afterwards, both from the lens and the image. There was a zoomed in version which was more what I wanted – silhouetted dad, looking through the binoculars at the boat, better framing – but the sand on the lens had made it truly unusable.

Two-Sided

Two-Sided

Again at the beach, I tried out splitting the photo with a natural boundary, but a vertical one rather than a horizontal one (which is more often the case). It’s quite jarring, but I’m not convinced by it. Perhaps if the other side of the boundary was more interesting.

The Beach

The Beach

This is exactly why we go to the beach when we do. It’s a bank holiday weekend, the weather is glorious, and there is no-one there apart from the dog walkers. This is a popular beach too (Frinton), so we really get the best of all worlds.

Tactile

Tactile

My ISP gives me 15 free photos a month (with a maximum of 30 credited to you at any one time). This is the first time that I’ve used the service, and they arrived today. I’d forgotten how different it was looking at photographs in real life rather than on a computer screen; it’s been at least a couple of years – when I first got my Sony camera – since I last looked at a hard photo. I’ll definitely be using them more often in the future.

Blackberries

Blackberries

Again, good old macro. It’s a shame that that one segment (?) of the blackberry in the foreground is red, but that’s nature for you! This is one of the few photos where i’ve actually managed to blur things in the background that I didn’t want in focus, rather than being unable to blur those that I did want blurred, or blurring that which I didn’t. Depth of field is a wonderful thing, if used right.

Numbing Inevitability

Numbing Inevitability

I’ve started looking over notes from last year. It’s a significant watershed in the holiday, but it’s been a long one so I’m ready for it. It’s been recommended to me that I should be really sharp with Quantum Mechanics when I get back, so that’s my prime target, but I’m going to go over everything before the end of the holiday – at least, that’s the plan.
